So, I am interested in finding out why pill bottles are stuff with cotton. At first I thought it might help with shipping the product. In case the bottle breaks the cotton would hold the pills in the bottle. However, that can't be the answer because the pill bottles are usually in boxes, so even if the bottle breaks and the pills fall out they would still be in the box. Maybe this is why we have major universities that have packing science as an actual degree.
Could it be that the cotton absorbs the smell or odor of the pills before it gets into the consumers hands?
I happen to know the answer to this! The cotton was used historically as packing material in pill bottles to prevent the pills from breaking as they rattled around. It has sort of stuck out of tradition, but a lot of manufacturers don't use it anymore, since they've a) figured out less crumbly pill formulae and b) better containers that reduce pill breakage.
